MIVA: Supporting Local Pioneers for 90 Years
MIVA Netherlands was founded in 1935, with one main goal: to improve access to healthcare and education. It has positively affected the lives of thousands of the most vulnerable children and people.
MIVA believes in the power of people who dedicate their lives to helping others. For 90 years, we have been supporting local pioneers in Africa and Asia. These heroes reach remote areas where medical care, education and other basic needs are too far away. It is the most vulnerable, especially children with disabilities, who suffer the most. Thankfully, there are people who see it as their calling to help these individuals, no matter how challenging the journey.
Mission and Impact
In remote areas of Africa and Asia, MIVA supports local organizations by providing essential transportation, communication tools, and solar energy solutions. We supply vehicles, ambulances, school buses, motorbikes, bicycles, boats, laptops, radios, phones, braille printers, internet kits, and solar systems to improve access to medical care, education, and other basic needs. With our extensive experience and network, we provide the right tools and training to strengthen community-based organizations, allowing them to reach more people and save lives. Our efforts enhance their capacity to deliver critical aid, making a significant difference in vulnerable communities.
Empowering Health and Education in Nigeria
Currently, six hundred million people in Africa do not have access to electricity, creating significant barriers to healthcare, education, productivity, and digital inclusion.
MIVA’s project in Nigeria, funded by Energy du Portugal, Access to Energy Fund and by Enstall-Empowers will install comprehensive solar energy solutions at three healthcare clinics and three inclusive schools. The primary objective is to provide affordable and sustainable electricity to enhance access to healthcare and education for children with disabilities (CWD). By transitioning to solar power, these facilities can fully utilize their equipment, focus resources on their core mission of providing healthcare, rehabilitation, and education for CWD, and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon footprints and setting a positive example for the community.
Equal local partnerships
MIVA collaborates with a partner network in twelve countries in Africa and Asia, together with the Liliane Foundation. Based on an equitable partnership, each country operates in a network of community-based organisations, led by one strategic partner organisation.
Our partners have different tasks, powers and responsibilities. They have autonomy to make decisions for policy and programme development, and responsibility to coordinate and build the capacity of the network of local partner organizations.
Applications for funding cannot be submitted to MIVA directly, but are submitted through the strategic partners of MIVA and the Liliane Foundation.
